What They’re Saying: President Obama “Castigating” Portman For Trump Support

COLUMBUS, OH -- Yesterday in Columbus, President Barack Obama urged Ohio voters to support Ted Strickland for U.S. Senate while ripping on Senator Rob Portman for previously supporting Donald Trump for President, blocking Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, and voting five times against pay equity for women.

The Strickland Campaign recently released a TV and radio ad featuring President Obama praising Ted’s record of fighting for working families, and a digital ad featuring President Obama calling out Senator Portman for his support of Trump.

Here’s what they’re saying:

Cleveland.com: Obama “Castigating” Portman for Trump Support

  • “Obama urged the crowd to support down-ballot Ohio Democrats as well, particularly U.S. Senate nominee Ted Strickland. Obama took a page from Harry Truman's political playbook, castigating Congressional Republicans such as Strickland's rival, U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, for blocking his agenda and refusing to compromise. ‘All they offer is gridlock and obstruction and 'no, Obama said.”

  • “Obama took some shots at Portman specifically, including over the Republican's decision last month to withdraw his endorsement of Trump Portman was for [Trump],’ Obama said, Then he kind of looked at the polls and said he's against him. You don't know what he's going to do this week. ...Being a leader is about doing the right thing when it's hard, not when it's easy.

Roll Call: Obama Hammers Trump, Portman in Ohio

  • “He accused GOP officials of ‘doing backflips’ on whether they truly support Trump’s candidacy. Obama included in that group Sen. Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican who is seeking a second term against Democrat Ted Strickland, a former governor and House member.

  • “Obama urged the crowd to vote early, saying they cannot take any race for granted. He said Clinton will, if elected, need allies like Ted Strickland. He touted Strickland’s support of policies to protect overtime pay and the ability of workers to collectively bargain, and to ensure women are paid the same as men. On those issues and others, he cast Portman as adamantly opposed, saying the incumbent senator voted against legislation aimed at ensuring better pay for women five times.”

The Ohio State University Lantern: Obama in Columbus: “Ted never supported Donald Trump”

  • “Obama urged those in attendance to vote for Strickland as Democrats aim to reclaim a majority in the Senate on Nov. 8. Ted never supported Donald Trump. You don’t know what Portman is going to do this week,’ Obama said, referencing Portman’s endorsement of the GOP nominee, which was withdrawn after a hot-mic video from a 2005 episode of Access Hollywood surfaced in which Trump made comments about groping women.”

Capital University Chimes: President Obama visits Capital, Criticizes Portman’s “refusal to denounce Trump”

  • “The president also spoke about the race between Ted Strickland and Rob Portman for U.S. senator from Ohio, echoing Strickland’s earlier remarks criticizing Portman for his refusal to denounce Trump.
