Ted Strickland Announces Endorsements From 30 NW Ohio Leaders, Visits Sheet Metal Apprenticeship Program

Toledo Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson: Strickland has always fought for the working people of NW Ohio and that’s what he’ll do in the U.S. Senate

COLUMBUS, OH — Today Ted Strickland joined Toledo Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson and local elected officials to announce that he has earned the endorsement of 30 Northwest Ohio leaders. The announcement was held at Michael’s restaurant in downtown Toledo.

Prior to announcing the endorsements, Ted met with students participating in a sheet metal apprenticeship program that is associated with Ohio’s auto industry at the Sheet Metal Workers Local Union Training Facility in Rossford. Ted pledged to support workforce training and continuing education programs in the U.S. Senate, like the bipartisan LEAP ACT which would provide tax credits to businesses that offer apprenticeships. Ted also highlighted his opposition to unfair trade policies like those supported by Senator Portman which have hurt Northwest Ohio’s economy and spoke about the contrast between Senator Portman and himself on the auto-rescue — which Portman called a “lousy deal.” In addition to supporting programs like apprenticeships, Ted has called to make higher education more affordable and accessible by expanding and protecting the Pell Grant and Perkins Loan programs, allowing students to refinance their loans at a fair interest rate, and ultimately working to make higher education debt-free.

“I am grateful to receive the endorsement of these leaders who share my strong commitment to fighting for Ohio’s working people,” said Ted Strickland. “Northwest Ohio’s economy has been rocked by politicians in Washington like Senator Portman who have repeatedly supported unfair trade policies that have shipped Ohio jobs overseas to places like China. In fact, I believe Portman is the best Senator China’s ever had. When it comes to trade policy, the difference between Senator Portman and myself is clear: he voted for 8 bad trade deals and I opposed them. He voted to give China Most Favored Nation trade status, and I opposed it. He voted to fast track the TPP through Congress, and I have always opposed this unfair trade deal because it will hurt working Ohioans in this community and across our state. The truth is that Senator Portman is voting this way because he's looking out for the Washington power brokers and the wealthy special interests he serves. In the U.S. Senate I will fight for Ohio's working people because that’s where I come from and that’s who I care about.”

“I am ecstatic to endorse Ted Strickland,” said Toledo Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson. “He has been a true champion for Northwest Ohio and Toledo as our governor, and I know he will bring that same commitment to fighting for Ohio's working people as our next U.S. Senator.”
