Strickland Campaign Releases New Digital Ad: “Portman Has Really Been Good To Me”

Spot highlights Trump’s praise for Portman & Portman’s endorsement of Trump in contrast to Gov. Kasich’s refusal to support Trump’s campaign

COLUMBUS, OH -- Following Donald Trump’s statement at his last Ohio rally praising Senator Portman and one week out from the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, today the Strickland For Senate campaign is launching a new digital advertisement: “Portman Has Really Been Good To Me.”

The spot uses video footage of Trump, Sen. Portman and Gov. John Kasich, highlighting how Portman has earned gushing praise from Trump for endorsing him despite his toxic and divisive rhetoric -- while Gov. Kasich is refusing to support Trump’s campaign.

“Unlike Ohio’s Republican Governor Kasich, Senator Portman’s endorsement of Trump has earned him gushing praise from the most divisive and toxic presidential nominee in modern history -- but that’s just more proof that Portman is the kind of spineless, Washington insider who puts his own calculated politics over what’s right for the people of Ohio,” said Strickland Campaign Spokesman David Bergstein. “Trump is praising Portman because they both share the same agenda -- prioritizing the interests of the rich and powerful at the expense of Ohio’s working families. And while Portman spent last week ducking through D.C. alleys to avoid questions about his endorsed candidate, there will be no rock Portman can hide under during the GOP Convention in Cleveland to avoid Trump’s toxic impact on his campaign.”

Following Trump’s rally in Ohio, the Washington Post wrote “It's safe to say getting a shout-out from Trump has not been on Portman's reelection to-do list.” Roll Call, The Columbus Dispatch,, and CBS-Columbus’ Face The State all highlighted how Portman recently snuck through an alley in D.C. after meeting with Trump to avoid answering questions from the press.

The ad will reach targeted voters in Ohio as part of the Strickland campaign’s ongoing six-figure paid media campaign, which will feature a mix of search, social display and digital pre-roll advertising.
