Statement From Former Gov. Strickland on Sen. Portman’s Continued Support for Iraq War

In response to a new report from the Northeast Ohio Media Group that "Sen. Rob Portman stands by his 2002 vote for the Iraq war,"  former Governor Ted Strickland issued the following statement:

“Voting against the Iraq war was one of the most important decisions I made as a Representative, I was unwavering in my opposition to it and it’s one of the votes I am most proud of. Today, Republicans and Democrats agree that this war was one of the most costly and disastrous foreign policy mistakes in the history of our nation. My most important priority will always be to keep Americans safe, and I join those like Governor Kasich who believe that this war did not make us safer. It is extraordinarily troubling that Senator Portman does not have the judgment to understand this. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”

Recently, Ohio Republican Governor and Presidential candidate John Kasich stated "I would never have committed ourselves to Iraq," although he supported the war in 2002.
