Prominent Ohio Women Attend Second Debate in Support of Ted Strickland

COLUMBUS, OH -- Ahead of tonight’s second debate between Ted Strickland and Senator Portman, the Ted Strickland for Senate Campaign announced that several prominent Ohio women leaders will be in tonight’s audience at Strickland’s invitation. The leaders include State Representative Kristin Boggs; Petee Talley, Secretary-Treasurer of the Ohio AFL-CIO; and Stella Shaw, Government and Community Relations Manager of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio.

Ahead of the debate, Boggs and Talley released the following statements -- highlighting the contrast between Ted and Senator Portman when it comes to issues that matter to Ohio’s women and working families:

From State Representative Kristin Boggs: "Ted Strickland has always looked out for Ohio women on issues ranging from our healthcare to our pocketbooks. As Governor, half the leaders in Ted's cabinet were women, and he created a special office for women's initiatives. In the Senate, Ted would build on that record, he will fight for equal pay for women, more affordable education opportunities, and paid family leave. Senator Portman has had every opportunity to support these commonsense changes that will help our working families, but instead he voted to defeat equal pay, and ignores the need for paid family leave. When Ted is in the Senate, he won't ignore the needs of Ohio's working families because he understands that we must implement policy that fits the way our families live in this 21st century economy."

From Petee Talley, Secretary-Treasurer of the Ohio AFL-CIO: "There's no better candidate to represent Ohio in the U.S. Senate than Ted Strickland. Ted Strickland believes women should earn equal pay for their work -- unlike his opponent Senator Portman who has voted against equal pay for women five times. We just can't trust someone like Senator Portman who doesn't believe women should be paid equally for performing the same job as a man. Ohio has one of the worst wage gaps in the country, and it's critical we send Ted Strickland to the Senate so he can fight to close this gap and promote equality."

Iris Harvey, the CEO of Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio also issued a statement.

From Iris Harvey: “Ted Strickland is an advocate for women’s rights. He supports Roe v. Wade, believes in Planned Parenthood, and understands health decisions are personal decisions that should be free from government interference. Senator Rob Portman is the exact opposite. He has made it abundantly clear he supports defunding Planned Parenthood, attacking not only women’s health, but the hundreds of thousands of Ohioans who depend on Planned Parenthood for reproductive health care and health education. The choice is clear this election. Ted stands with us and will be a champion of women’s rights as the next United States Senator from Ohio.”

Previously, Strickland released his Ohio Families First proposal to fight for women and working families and announced “Women For Ted,” a coalition of 100 Ohio women elected officials, community leaders and activists who are working to mobilize voters across the state and share Ted’s message of fighting for working families with Ohioans throughout the campaign.
