In Toledo, Strickland Joins Union Veterans to Highlight How He’ll Fight for Ohio’s Working Families

Strickland calls on Portman to renounce endorsement of Trump after attacks on Gold Star Khan family

COLUMBUS, OH -- Today, Ted Strickland joined a group of union veterans in Toledo for a discussion on policies to improve the lives of Ohio’s working people and servicemembers. Strickland was joined by Iraq veteran Will Fischer, a United States Marine and Executive Director of the Union Veterans Council, AFL-CIO.

During the event, Strickland reiterated his call for Senator Portman to retract his endorsement of Trump following Trump’s attacks against the Gold Star Khan family and his offensive comments about Purple Heart recipients. Strickland also spoke about his record of fighting for Ohio’s veterans and how he will bring that same commitment to the Senate: as governor, Strickland offered free tuition for veterans, cut taxes for veterans and military families, and created the first veterans focused cabinet level department.

“In the Senate I will continue fighting to ensure that America’s veterans receive all the honor, dignity and benefits they have rightfully earned. But Senator Portman’s continued support for Donald Trump – even after Trump’s attacks on the Gold Star Khan family, his insulting statements about prisoners of war, and his disparaging remarks about Purple Heart recipients – is simply disgraceful,” said Ted Strickland. “The truth is, if Portman won’t stand up to Trump after these despicable attacks on our military families, there’s no way Ohioans can trust Portman to stand up for us in the Senate. As governor, I am proud that we cut taxes and made college tuition free for veterans and established the first cabinet-level department dealing specifically with veterans’ affairs –this is the same commitment I will bring to serving and fighting for our military families in the Senate who have earned our country’s undying gratitude.”
