COLUMBUS, OH -- At Donald Trump’s rally in Columbus today, the Ted Strickland for Senate campaign is distributing flyers to inform voters about Sen. Rob Portman’s decades-long record of supporting unfair trade policies that have cost Ohio over 300,000 jobs to places like China.
“Senator Portman can skip another Trump rally in Ohio, but there’s nowhere he can hide from his decades long, unabashed record of supporting unfair trade deals that have cost Ohio over 300,000 jobs,” said Strickland for Senate Spokesman David Bergstein. “When Trump says the dumbest people in the world are making the worst trade deals, he’s talking about Washington politicians like former U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman. The truth is that Portman is a dedicated outsourcer, the ultimate Washington insider, and the best senator China’s ever had.”
Trump is shining a bright spotlight on Portman’s trade record: the National Journal’s Andrea Drusch stated, “It’s of no help to Portman that Donald Trump is coming and bashing trade deals, saying the people who created them were stupid;” Politico wrote that “Portman has struggled to align his message with Trump’s calls for sharp slowdowns in foreign trade and renegotiations of existing deals;” and these headlines say it all -- Bloomberg wrote that “Ohio’s Portman Faces Trade Backlash,” while Roll Call wrote “Trump's Trade Agenda Dogs Portman in Cleveland.” The Ted Strickland campaign previously released a digital ad, “Trump Said It,” featuring the voice of Trump to highlight Portman’s decades-long record of supporting unfair trade policies that have devastated Ohio’s economy.
