Tell us why education matters to you

on 10/21/09 by Or

When Governor Strickland asked you to stand with him and protect education in Ohio earlier this month, we received an incredible response. Thousands of you signed the petition, and many wrote us comments about why protecting Ohio's schools from budget cuts was so important.

Now, legislators have proposed a plan that will fully fund our schools while balancing a budget. The Ohio House is expected to vote on that legislation today. And as the General Assembly debates these bills, it's important to keep in mind that protecting education is about real people - not politics.

To remind us of the real stories behind education reform, Governor Strickland e-mailed supporters this morning to ask a simple question: why does education matter to you?
Here's what Ted wrote about his own story:

As the eighth of nine children and the son of a steelworker, I never imagined that I'd get to go to college. But when I was in high school, a teacher took me to visit a college across the river in Kentucky.

That visit made me realize that higher education was a possibility for someone like me. Eventually, I became the first child in my family to go to college--and I went on to earn a PhD. I am deeply, deeply thankful for all the dedication educators showed me, and I'm determined to see that Ohio upholds that commitment to our young people in this and future budgets.

So tell us your story. What has education meant in your life?
